Custom Valve Package for Nuclear Decommissioning

T-T Flow® were recently approached by specialist nuclear consultants to provide essential equipment for the decommissioning of a nearly 50-year-old power station in Scotland.

The station generated over 297.4TWh of zero-carbon electricity in its lifetime (EDF Energy), enough to power every home in Scotland for 3 decades.

Originally commissioned in 1976 and set to serve for 25 years, the plant is being decommissioned 20 years later than planned due to structural concerns with bricks that make up the reactor core (BBC News).

As part of the shut-down process, T-T Flow® supplied DN100 metal seat gate valves flanged to BS10 Table D. Their unique ductile iron design makes the valves strong yet lightweight, with a durable and corrosion-resistant fusion bonded epoxy coating providing additional strength for the critical first stage of the process – defueling.

Due to the application's hazardous nature, remote actuation equipment was also required for safe, remote valve operation.

Multiple custom-manufactured off-set extension spindles were supplied with the isolating gate valves, constructed from corrosion-resistant stainless steel for long-term reliable operation.

Not only do the custom extension spindles ensure valve operative safety, they also increase valve operating precision. Accurate and secure actuation are crucial to the level of care and precision required when defueling a nuclear reactor.
