How do I choose the right booster pump for my home?
Consider the following factors:
Pressure – What is the current incoming pressure and what outgoing pressure do you want to achieve? What pressure losses will the pump have to overcome due to friction as water travels through the system? What is the pipework’s maximum pressure rating?
Flow rate – The size of the pump, motor and pressure vessel your booster set needs is dictated by the estimated maximum flow rate of water required to your home at any given time.
Pump type – Many centrifugal pumps are suitable for domestic clean water boosting. For more remote or demanding domestic water applications a multi-stage or jet pump can provide high rates of lift and pressure.
Power supply – Electric motors are standard for domestic booster sets, however in remote areas without access to electricity a diesel or petrol generator may be needed to power the system.
Can booster pump sets be used in both domestic and commercial properties?
Different sizes and designs of booster pump sets are intended for use in different applications. For domestic settings, single pump booster sets with smaller pressure vessels will provide the flow rate and pressure necessary to serve the whole property without using unnecessary energy.
For larger commercial properties or industrial sites, water boosting sets with multiple pumps and large pressure vessels will ensure all water outlets receive consistently pressurised water.
What maintenance is required for booster pump sets?
Visual inspections – Inspect the pump body and any other visible components for signs of damage, wear, leaks and corrosion. Replace parts as needed to ensure performance quality and avoid breakdowns. Monitor the booster set’s pressure for any abnormal readings that could indicate a deeper issue.
Audible indications – Crackling, bubbling or other new noises coming from your booster set’s pumps could be a sign of cavitation, air entrapment or bearing degradation that needs addressing.
Keep relevant parts lubricated – Bearings, seals and shafts (?) must remain lubricated to work effectively.
Clean – The pump, suction strainer, fittings, valves and pipework should be cleaned regularly to prevent debris buildup that can affect pumping performance, damage components or lead to a breakdown.

What is potable water?
Also know as drinking water – potable water is water that is safe for human consumption and is used for drinking, cooking, cleaning and any other applications that require hygenic water.
What is the difference between clear, clean and potable water?
Potable water is treated to be fit for human consumption, clear and clean water are the same - they may look clean but they have not been treated. Clearwater can include any surface/subsurface water that is not sewage, e.g. storm water that can gather in pipes and drains.
What is WRAS approval?
The Water Regulations Approvals Scheme (WRAS) is an independent UK certification body that ensures manufacturers of plumbing products and materials are compliant with UK water regulations.
A clean water booster set is a pump system for boosting water pressure where there is insufficient flow, this can be caused by a low mains pressure or the height of the property the fluid is being pumped to.
Low flow pressure can lead to insufficient water supply to outlets such as showers, taps and irrigation systems, causing daily inconveniences in domestic and commercial settings.
This depends on the size of your application, the geography of the area and factors such as head losses and ancillary equipment. A site with high water demands, a hilly landscape and several water outlets will need a booster set with more pumps to complete the job reliably.

Fixed speed booster sets provide a constant pressure based on the maximum flow rate required by a system, this pressure is managed by pumps turning on and off when more or less pressure is required.
Booster sets with variable speed control drives (VSDs) adjust system pressure in real-time, changing the motor frequency and pump speed in response to fluctuating site demands; providing a more stable flow rate.
