Adoptable Pumping Station Surge Analysis

Adoptable Pumping Station Surge Analysis

A key part of pumping station design is the suitability of the chosen pumps to effectively handle the pumped medium, air management and the effects of pressure surges within the installation. Without proper consideration, air accumulation and surges can lead to damaged components, inefficient operation and complete system failures.

T-T Pumping Stations® provide surge analysis as part of any adoptable pumping station quotation with a rising main over 500m. As the name suggests, this is the study of the effects of pumped liquid velocity within a pipeline.

The topography (the layout and elevation changes) of the rising main is also studied to ensure that protective measures such as air valves and wash out chambers are correctly placed, this will prevent air pockets from forming and facilitate easy access for future maintenance needs.

With expert pump selection and carefully placed protective measures, our team can ensure your pumping station is efficient and reliable.

The Problem

During the installation of an adoptable pumping station – on a 52-property site in Neath, South Wales – our engineers found that undulation within the system’s rising main would allow air pockets to collect.

This put the station’s operating performance at risk, increasing the chance of a breakdown due to cavitation, water hammer and valve slam.

The Solution

Our experts specified and installed a T-T Flow® compact wastewater air valve within the pumping station’s valve chamber to allow air to flow freely within the system.

The air release valve ensures there is no air entrapment within the rising main, expelling excess air from the pumped media before it can enter and collect at high points along the length of pipework.
