Actuated Gate Valves for Wastewater Treatment Works

Actuated Gate Valves for Wastewater Treatment Works

Our specialists in T-T Flow® recently worked alongside flow control solutions manufacturer Rotork to deliver intelligently actuated gate valves for a wastewater treatment plant in Wales.

The Problem

Beaumaris Wastewater Treatment works, managed by Welsh Water, treats incoming wastewater from local residential, commercial and industrial sites to regulatory standards before it is discharged back into nearby watercourses.

During a scheduled refurbishment of the treatment plant to ensure its continued waste management services, T-T Flow® were called upon to provide remotely actuated gate valves.

The Solution

Our engineers worked to stringent end-user specifications to assemble, configure and function test multiple resilient seat gate valves to ensure suitability before delivering them all to site within a short timeframe.

WRAS approved Aquavault® resilient seat gate valves were chosen as they lend themselves to a wide range of flow isolating duties in potable water, raw water and wastewater with a low solids content. EN1074 and BS5163 compliant design ensure the valves meet pressure-rating, leakage and operational criteria for high-performance isolation, with an EPDM encapsulated wedge providing tighter seals compared to standard metal seat valves.

To best withstand the harsh wastewater environment, the supplied isolation valves were manufactured in high-strength ductile iron with a stainless steel non-rising stem. A fusion bonded epoxy coating and wax-filled fasteners provide additional corrosion resistance, while the wedges’ self-draining profile prevents solids from accumulating and affecting the valve’s isolation performance.

Aquavault® resilient seat gate valves also have a smooth internal flow path free of internal pockets and that open to full bore, optimising flow through the treatment centre for maximum hydraulic efficiency.

Rotork electric actuators were fitted to the valves prior to dispatch and provide a multitude of benefits:

  • Remote actuation – The position of the valves meant they were inaccessible or unsafe for workers to operate manually, the electric actuator allows for remote actuation from a safe location.
  • Increased torque – The high-pressure, high-flow wastewater in the treatment works mean manual actuation poses a health and safety risk to operatives, electric actuation negates this risk.
  • Intelligence – Rotork’s electric actuator provides a myriad of intelligent benefits, including position indication and torque control for precise valve positioning.

Actuation allows sites to implement intelligent automation for more accurate, consistent and efficient valve operation and can easily be integrated with existing communication protocols. Valve actuation also eliminates the need for manual operation and facilitates remote real-time monitoring for increased safety and efficiency.
