Custom Seawater Filters for Hong Kong

Custom Seawater Filters for Hong Kong

A bespoke water filtration system and ancillaries were required for seawater flushing at a landmark office building on Hong Kong Island, including the supply of custom-developed inline seawater filters and multi-basket strainers.

The Problem

Located close to the historic Victoria Harbour, the prestigious 32-story development houses both the district court and numerous other government departments.

As with around 80% of other buildings in Hong Kong, seawater flushing is used to serve toilet cisterns in the block, a method first piloted during the 1950s to reduce the demand for potable water. Pumped seawater enters the building and then passes through a series of filters to remove contaminants, before distribution around the building for flushing.

While seawater flushing has many sustainability benefits, it also raises challenges for network pumps and fittings. The client approached T-T looking for robust and easy-to-maintain components and ancillaries for seawater filtration, including the supply of bespoke inline filters and multiple strainer baskets.

The Solution

T-T Flow® has rich experience in the region, working previously on several prestigious projects regarding the design, manufacture and supply of custom valves and ancillaries.

For this project, our challenge was to develop and supply two 600mm nominal bore bespoke inline filters rated to 16 Bar, each with multiple strainer baskets having 2mm perforations.

Working diligently alongside the consultant and contractor, T-T successfully designed and manufactured multi-basket strainers offering an increased filtration area that overcame several site-specific obstacles.

Specifically, this involved meeting a predetermined hydraulic performance (very low-pressure differentials) and overcoming physical constraints within the fabric of the building. Another critical element was material selection for the arduous environment to ensure longevity, and the positioning of ancillary drain valves to assist with maintenance.

In addition to custom multi-basket strainers, the contractor also took delivery of additional stocked valves. T-T stocks a vast range of waterworks iron valves for wastewater and potable duties, with many having WRAS approval.
