Custom Extension Spindle and Valve for Oil Industry

Having been turned away by multiple penstock manufacturers around the globe, a US-based Industrial Process Consultancy firm came to T-T Flow® in search of a reliable isolation valve on behalf of their client.

The Problem

The client, a French oil conglomerate in the process of establishing a new processing site in the UK, needed a quality-engineered penstock valve and operating equipment for critical flow control of hot sulphur between two holding tanks.

Due to the aggressive nature of the medium, internal tank temperatures of up to 200°C and the resulting thermal stress on surrounding equipment, sourcing a willing manufacturer had proved difficult.

When T-T Flow® was approached for a solution, they were happy to take on the task of delivering an isolation valve for such a challenging environment. 

The Solution

After multiple virtual international meetings to establish the parameters of the application, our team supplied a 150x150 penstock and a site-adjustable straight extension spindle for safe manual flow control of the hazardous material.

The penstock valve was designed and manufactured in the UK, informed by the application’s high temperatures, aggressive media and health and safety needs. The valve body, fasteners, sluice and custom operating equipment were constructed in duplex stainless steel for its superb strength, corrosion resistance and ability to withstand high temperatures without expanding, cracking or shattering.

To ensure consistent and leak-free isolation, the penstock also features resilient sealing to all four sides of the aperture and self-adjusting seals on the sluice (gate) that offset the effects of thermal expansion.

The application’s hazardous nature required an operating room to be built above the tanks for remote valve actuation, so in addition to the penstock valve our team supplied a site-adjustable extension spindle, handwheel with protective polycarbonate tube and floor-mounted pedestal for ergonomic manual operation.

Due to the risk of operative exposure to hazardous vapours rising from the hot sulphur tanks below, our experts implemented a unique rubber seal arrangement around the base of the headstock that prevents harmful sulphur dioxide and hydrogen sulphide from entering the operating room.
