Wessex Water and T-T Flow – Engineering Innovation Beneath Somerset

Wessex Water and T-T Flow – Engineering Innovation Beneath Somerset

The Challenge

In the picturesque village of Shoscombe, Somerset, Wessex Water is investing £2.5 million to upgrade its sewage treatment facility, aiming to boost capacity during heavy storm events and ensure long-term operational efficiency. A key element of this project is the selection and installation of innovative wastewater air valves - an area where T-T stepped in to assist. Correctly sizing and positioning these valves is essential, as poorly chosen valves can cause inefficiencies, increase energy consumption, and even lead to damaging issues such as water hammer.

Wessex Water required a solution capable of handling variable flow conditions, minimising energy usage, preventing vacuum conditions and water hammer, and remaining easy to maintain and cost-effective throughout its lifecycle.

The Solution

T-T offers a wide range of utility valves - from wedge gate valves to butterfly valves and penstocks. For Shoscombe, T-T’s engineers recommended a standout product: four-function wastewater air valves, available directly from stock.

What Makes These Valves Special?

Like conventional combination air valves, they:

  • Discharge large volumes of air during pipeline filling

  • Release accumulated air during system operation

  • Allow air intake during pipeline draining to prevent a vacuum

But here’s the innovation:

Rapid Fill Protection Mechanism
If outflowing air exceeds a critical velocity, the valve automatically slows the incoming water column - preventing water hammer and protecting the system.

T-T supplied numerous full-bore, lightweight, compact engineered valves with the following features:

  • Material: Epoxy-coated ductile iron

  • Float Assembly: Direct-acting stainless steel (no linkages = fewer failures)

  • Chamber Profile: Sloped to prevent waste build-up and ensure free float movement

  • Performance: Full-bore capacity, seals at low pressure (0.2 Bar)

  • Maintenance: Easy access and reduced lifecycle costs

Outcome

Thanks to close collaboration between T-T’s engineers and Wessex Water’s asset team, the air valves were correctly sized and positioned. Resulting in more efficient operation, reduced energy consumption and minimised maintenance costs. As the project progresses, the collaboration between Wessex Water and T-T stands as a testament to the power of precision engineering and partnership. By selecting the right technology and working hand-in-hand with experts, Wessex Water is not only enhancing its infrastructure but also setting a new standard for wastewater treatment in the region.

This isn’t just about valves - it’s about innovation, resilience, and the quiet engineering excellence that keeps our communities running smoothly, even when the storms roll in.
